About two dozen employees of the state-owned Barbados Agricultural Management Company, B.A.M.C. were handed retrenchment letters today as a restructuring at the agency continues as part of government’s economic restructuring and transformation plan.

About a hundred workers have so far been laid off from the B.A.M.C. which manages the country’s lone sugar factory along with about seven thousand acres of government owned farmland.  The agency had about five hundred staff. Last week the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations called for a halt to the lay-offs and a return to the bargaining table.

The laid-off B.A.M.C. workers were today collecting their retrenchment letters as representatives of government, labour and the private sector met for another social partnership consultation as the government this month commences stage three of its restructuring program.
