The President of the Barbados Prison Officers Association On Bail

The head of the Barbados Prison Officers Association Trevor Browne has been released on bail in the amount of one thousand Barbados dollars after appearing in court this morning.

He appeared before Magistrate Christopher Birch in the Distrate C Court sitting at St. Matthias, Christ Church.

He is accused of what in prison service jargon is called inciting mutiny but which on the criminal charge sheet reads, maliciously endeavouring to seduce prison officers from their duties.

Mr. Browne faces four accounts after three male and one female prison officer reportedly provided statements in relation to the matter.

The Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations, CTUSAB, the umbrella body for trade unions in this country says its keeping a careful eye on the case.

CTUSAB President Edwin O’Neal says it’s unfortunate that a trade unionist in 2018 could be arrested for, according to him, doing his job.

Delcia Burke acting general secretary of this country’s largest public sector trade union,  the National Union of Public Workers, NUPW, says the charging of a trade union head is a worrying development.
