The Barbados Bar Association welcomes plans to prevent prisoners being left on remand for long periods

The Barbados Bar Association has welcomed an announcement by Home Affairs minister, Edmund Hinkson, that measures are being put in place to prevent prisoners being left on remand for long periods without being brought to trial.

This follows the revelation of a case where a man spent a decade on remand at Dodds Prison on a theft charge without being brought to court, even though he was willing to plead guilty.

Mr. Hinkson says he sought to find out if they are any other such cases and has provided a list of those prisoners to the Attorney General.

President of the Barbados Bar Association, Liesel Weekes, says it’s worrying that a man could have spent ten years on remand on a charge for which he might have been sentenced to no more than a year and a half in jail. She’s happy that steps are being taken to address the issue.
