Persaud: I Would Resign!

Economist, Professor Avinash Persaud, says he would resign if he were in the position of the current Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados, Dr DeLisle Worrell.

Speaking on yesterday’s edition of Down to Brass Tacks, Professor Persaud said that the relationship between the Central Bank and the government is too integrated to properly function with animosity.

His comments follow the news that Dr. Worrell went to the High Court on Sunday to get a temporary injunction restraining the Minister of Finance from firing him.

“If it were me in that position, I would resign because I think that whatever we have on paper, the relationship between the government and Central Bank is a deeply integrated, connected relationship. One cannot operate independently of the other. One cannot operate without a good working relationship with each other, and that maybe one of the reasons which makes it impossible for the Central Bank to have been complaining to the Government, because you need to have a very strong working relationship.”

He also suggests that the injunction will undoubtedly challenge the existence of  a strong working relationship.
