Government launches the Thorne Commission

The Barbados government today launched a new Commission on Local Governance with Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley declaring that its part of efforts to engender trust among the population in the workings of government by promoting empowerment and enfranchisement.

She says the aim is to deepen democracy and allow a greater level of participation.

Prime Minister Mottley sees it as a new approach in managing the affairs of the country based on consultation with the people and listening to a variety of voices on key issues. And she insists that is not a backdoor path to local government.

In that regard, Commission Chairman Queen’s Counsel Ralph Thorne spoke about creating twenty consultative assemblies built not along partisan lines or constituency boundaries but based on parish structures.
