Cane harvest starts Monday

The way is now clear for the 2020 sugar harvest to begin on Monday after a deal was brokered today.
The deal was sealed in talks between the Barbados Agricultural Management Company and the Barbados Workers Union.
Several players in the industry were locked in discussions for most of the day today, following an impasse over a special allowance for employees of the state-owned Barbados Agricultural Management Company  (BAMC).
BAMC workers were demanding compensation for processing cane they say is often riddled with cow-itch.
After hours of talks at the Ministry of Agriculture, chaired by Minister of Agriculture Indar Weir and involving officials of the BAMC, the BWU and the Barbados Sugar Industries Limited, an agreement was reached on an allowance for Portvale factory workers who are affected by cow itch.
