BWA warns severe drought may prompt the issuing of a prohibition notice

A severe drought and aging infrastructure are creating a number of challenges for the Barbados Water Authority and a water prohibition notice may soon be in effect.

The situation was outlined  by the BWA’s General Manager, Kieth-Roy Halliday speaking to moderator Joy-Ann Haigh on Voice of Barbados’ call-in program Down to Brass Tacks.

He disclosed that a number of recommendations are going to cabinet to address the situation.

Mr. Halliday called  VOB’s program after Ms. Haigh highlighted the water shortages in several areas around the country and also made reference to the drought conditions.

The BWA head emphasised the need for water conservation.

Mr. Halliday says a key step to try to boost water supply will be to increase output from the desalination plant at Spring Garden.

He also explained how the drought conditions have affected water supply to other areas.
