BERT monitoring committee warns there can be no let up in tight controls on government spending

The Chairman of the monitoring committee for the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation Plan, Edward Clarke, is wondering whether the Barbados economy might have recorded more growth than the figures show.

Speaking at a news briefing held by the monitoring committee, Mr. Clarke, the Chairman of the Barbados Private Sector Association, suggested that the size of the increase in VAT revenue doesn’t square with a reported decline in economic growth for last year over 2017.

Mr. Clarke noted that the various targets had been achieved such as cutting government spending, increasing revenue, controlling debt and raising the foreign reserves.

And he stressed the importance of sticking to the plan.
