Barbados Productivity Council Shut Down

The Barbados Productivity Council is to close after more than two decades of operation with the loss of more than a dozen jobs, a victim of government’s restructuring program that aims to slash public sector costs.

The Productivity Council’s Executive Director John Pilgrim,  made the disclosure while speaking to journalists at this morning’s launch of the Barbados Workers Union’s week of excellence at the Central Bank.

He seemed to indicate the move took both him and his staff by surprise.

The closure of the council was later confirmed by Labour Minister Colin Jordan while touring Oran Limited.

He said the functions of the council will continue as part of the ministry of economic affairs and investment rather than as a separate agency.  Mr. Jordan says it can’t be business as usual in the public sector.
