Attorney General reports success in efforts to quell a spate of gun violence

Barbados’ Attorney General, Dale Marshall, reports success so far in efforts to quell a spate of gun violence part of which involved stepped up patrols by the police with support from the Barbados Defence Force.

Addressing a Barbados Labour Party meeting at St. Christopher’s Primary School, Mr. Marshall, also defended the deployment of the BDF and promised there would be no let up.

Mr. Marshall says the criminal element appears to be getting access to more powerful fire arms including AK-47s and a plentiful supply of ammunition.

He indicated there is evidence that some business people are facilitating gun-smuggling and issued this warning.

The Attorney General, while praising Police Commissioner Tyrone Griffith, describing him as an excellent commissioner, sought to explain the government’s decision to draw on the experience of former commissioners of police.

The Attorney General also announced that the police will be freed up from desk jobs that can be performed by civilians, such as processing certificates of character so that more officers can be put on the streets. He also indicated that police may no longer be responding to the scene of every traffic accident unless it is a very serious one.
