A big legal battle brewing between two top NUPW members

General Secretary of the National Union of Public Workers , Roslyn Smith, is suing the union’s President Akanni McDowall and two media houses over statements in relation to a controversy regarding use of a union credit card.

Speaking to Starcom Network News by phone from hospital where she remains warded recovering from an illness, Ms. Smith confirmed the contents of a statement distributed to the media today about the law suit,

The statement says Mrs. Smith’s attorney sent correspondence to Mr. McDowall dated January 11th this year and that Mr. McDowall’s attorney confirmed its receipt.

Ms. Smith is alleging that certain allegations in relation to her use of an NUPW credit card are untrue and scandalous and in the words of her attorney amount to serious defamation.

In fact she’s claiming the charges could have gotten her fired.

The NUPW general secretary is seeking from her President what her attorney calls substantial compensation and is also seeking compensation from the two media houses in question, the Nation and Barbados Today.

And of course we contacted Mr. McDowall for his response.
