NUPW Boss – “No issue with cameras at the island’s ports”

President of the National Union of Public Workers, Akanni McDowall says customs officers nor his union is against the use of cameras at the island’s ports.

He says cameras are already in place at all ports of entry and footage has already been used to discipline employees, who were found guilty of misconduct.

Mr. McDowall made the point on Voice of Barbados’ Down To Brass Tacks call in programme, in response to comments made by Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite at yesterday’s meeting of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association.

Mr. Brathwaite said at that meeting that cameras will be installed at all ports of entry as part of the fight against gun violence despite what he called, alleged opposition by customs officers and trade unions. There have been reports of illegal guns allegedly entering Barbados via the island’s sea and air ports.

However, Mr. McDowall says a protocol is needed to manage the operating of these cameras.
